RAFTING

Rafting, at a time when there were no other roads, was the cheapest way to transport wood from Tara mountain to Belgrade. For years, the rafters ruled the rivers with their rafting skills and their courage, daring and endurance caused admiration. These were mostly skilled people from the settlements around Tara mountain.

The basic structure of the raft consisted of long pine and spruce trees, which were connected to each other by tying and clenching. A lot of round and sawn timber is piled on the raft, and they were transported like that to Belgrade, day after day.

A hundred years of rafting down the Drina river was interrupted by the construction of hydroelectric power plants, and the famous Drina rafters had to leave their river and their profession. In an attempt to save memory to this tradition, the “Tara – Drina” Tourist Organization organizes the “Drinska Regata” every year, where, in addition to hundreds of different vessels, there are also several authentic Drina rafts made of pine logs.
