Drina River
The Drina River permeating Tara from the northwest and north sides is the largest contact river of the Bajina Bašta municipality, 60km long. The Drina River is created by the merger of Piva and Tara at Scepan Polje in Montenegro and is a total flow of 345.9 km and represents the largest tributary of the Sava River.
Drina belongs to the second class and is counted in the cleanest waterways of Serbia. The drina is known as the cradle of rafting, known for its angry rapids and falls, now obedient and peaceful in its lakes. Fishing on the Drina is an experience you never forget.
It is a haven for fishermen because in addition to being one of the cleanest rivers it also abounds with a variety of fish species, of which they are more attractive lily, trout, scotch, hedgehog, klen, net, catfish… There are about 30 species of fish in the Drina River, but it is certainly the most famous huchen, also referred to as the “Queen of the Drina”. Of all the fish on the Drina, it is the hardest to catch and it is every fisherman’s dream and in the area of Bajina Basta the largest specimens in Europe were caught with over 30kg. In addition to the huchen being hunted for artificial bait (wobbler-cheater), it’s a very attractive hunt for an artificial fly (fly fishing).
The name Drina is thought to come from the prawn base of DER, from which the verb of yelling was created, to shout with meaning to tear, tear. This word describes the great power of water, which has the power to shout rocks, mountains and soil to create its course. According to another theory, the name Drina comes from the ancient Greek name Dreinos, which in the ancient Romans became Drinus. The Romans took that name from the natives and it is believed to have been the name of a mythological pagan deity. Serbs accepted the old name Drina, but they have long called it Zelenika and Zelenka – after the emerald green color of the water. Because of the winding flow of the river, sayings are often used about who will correct the Drina or don’t twist the curves of the Drina, which indicate some redundant, useless work.
